Points of Emphasis for the CVSA International Road Check 2025
This year’s CVSA International Road Check will have two main points of emphasis:
- Tires – Inspectors will check for tread depth, sidewall damage, proper inflation, and overall condition.
- Driver Records of Duty Status – Officers will closely review logbooks and electronic logging devices (ELDs) to ensure compliance with hours-of-service regulations and verify that entries are accurate.
Inspection Process
Most inspections conducted during the week will follow the North American Standard Level I procedure, which includes a 37-step review of driver credentials, vehicle condition, and cargo securement. I would also anticipate checks on brake systems, steering, lighting, suspension, and more. In Michigan, inspections will take place at weigh stations, rest areas, and through mobile patrols. The state’s enforcement teams will be active throughout the three-day period, so carriers should plan accordingly to avoid disruptions.
Tips for Preparing
- Review your tire maintenance program and inspect for common wear issues.
- Ensure you have up-to-date credentials and understand how to operate your ELDs.
- Conduct internal audits on logbooks and duty status records to preempt any violations.
- Communicate with dispatch to build in flexibility for any inspection-related delays.
Staying proactive during the CVSA International Road Check is not only about avoiding violations—it’s an opportunity to reinforce safety standards across your fleet to keep you, and everyone else on the road safe.
